This week at Caney Creek Acres, our meat chickens went far out into our orchard of peach, fig trees and blueberry bushes. Even with grass as tall as themselves, they are able to flatten and eat the grass in less than two hours. They are visibly excited when every morning they get to enjoy eating a new plot filled with interesting bugs. They’re doing a great job mowing in between our trees!

Because they need ½ a pound of feed a day, we keep them happy and growing with Nature’s Best Starter/Grower, an organic feed that we have been using for our own chickens since 2021. Although it’s not the most cost efficient way to buy feed for broilers, since we’re a small producer and do not own large fork lifts, we decided to work with our local Tractor Supply manager, who gives us a small discount due to the large quantities we buy at a time. It is hard to find affordable organic feeds in Texas, so our options are limited while we do not invest in machinery to order large totes from up North, where the organic grains are usually produced.

Other milestones we had this week:
Our first batch is sold out!
The second batch is out in the pasture
We ordered 150 meat chicks for our third and final batch before the Summer.
We are now producers for the Reko Ring Farm to Table group in the Tyler area.
Here is the timeline for our upcoming batches, so that you can plan your next orders from us:
May 14th with a delivery on May 22nd
June 4th third batch with a delivery of June 5th
Stay tuned for next week’s newsletter and what Caney Creek Acres has going on!
